5 missing as trawler sinks in Narayanganj

Five persons including three members of a family went missing as a trawler capsized in the river Buriganga in Narayanganj city this morning.

At least 10 people were injured when the trawler sank in Dikrir Chor area with 40 to 50 people after it was hit by a launch, reports our Narayanganj correspondent quoting police.

The missing passengers are Selim Khan of Shiddhirganj, his daughter Moushumi Akhter, son Emon Khan and Abdul Kader and Selim Miah of Munshiganj.

The accident took place around 6:00am when the passengers were returning from a Urs at Radhanagar in Sadar upazila, police said.

Police, divers and fire service were jointly working to rescue the missing people, said Din Moni, deputy assistant director of local fire station.

They did not find any bodies in the river but were able to trace the location of the sunken trawler, duty officer inspector Bhajan Sarker of Fire Service and Civil Defense headquarter told The Daily Star.

The rescue drive was concluded at 7:20pm today and will be resumed around 8:00am tomorrow, he added.
