80 Ctg ‘Shibir men’ held with huge firearms cache
Law enforcers arrested 80 alleged activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and recovered 14 firearms with ammunition and huge amount of gunpowder in an overnight raid at two government colleges in Chittagong.
The arrests and recovery were made from Chittagong College and Hazi Muhammad Mohsin College in the port city.
On information of a "sabotage plan", a team of the detective branch (DB) of police conducted a raid at Suhrawardy hall of Chittagong College, said SM Tanvir Ahmed, additional deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
During the overnight drive, the law enforcers arrested 72 activists of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and recovered an AK-22, a 303 rifle, three pistols, four guns, five rocket flares, 64 rounds bullets and 25 cartridges, the police official told our Chittagong correspondent.
Later in the morning, the law enforcers conducted another raid at Mohsin College and arrested eight more Shibir men from a hill adjacent the college.
The policemen also recovered a large amount of gunpowder and two sacks of bomb-making materials from the hill, a Shibir hideout, during the raid that continued till 11:30am today.
