AL man stabbed to death in Kushtia
An Awami League (AL) man was stabbed to death and two other members of the party were severely injured in an attack by a rival group over establishing supremacy at Madhpur village in Kushtia Sadar upazila this morning.
Deceased Azim Uddin Mondol, 55, a resident of Madhpur village, was an activist of AL Ujangram union unit, reports our correspondent from Kushtia.
According to police and locals, there was a longstanding dispute between the two factions of the party --- one led by Abu Bakar Siddique, general secretary of Ujangram union AL, and the other by Abdul Zalil, former member of Ujangram union parishad.
Today, when Abdul Zalil’s nephew Azim Uddin went to Ujangram bazar, members of the opponent group attacked him around 8.30am and stabbed Azim indiscriminately, said Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Islamic University police station.
They also Jalal Mondol, 43 and Motiar Rahman, 47, when they came to save Azim, the OC said.
Both Jalal and Motiar are relatives of Abdul Zalil and also members of his faction, he added.
Azim was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 10.30am, Jahangir said.
Police rushed to the spot and arrested AL leader Abu Bakar in this connection with the incident, the police official said.
Additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert further clash.
