In view of the cyclone 'Komen' approaching, authorities have suspended operations on all water routes throughout the country.

The suspension took effect from this morning, Md Kabir Hossain, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) told The Daily Star Online today.

"We took the decision around 3:00am early today due to adverse weather," he said. "The decision has been announced at all river ports across the country."

Cyclone 'Komen' was just 65 kilometres away from Chittagong port until last reported around 11:30am. It has been influencing the weather across the coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, and their offshore islands and chars under danger signal no. 7.

Coastal districts of Borguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirozpur, Jhalokathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands under danger signal no. 5.

Waves upto 5 feet in height to strike coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur,  Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirozpur, Borguna, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars.
