A bank official in Narayanganj today found a bag with several lakh taka while riding on a CNG-run autorickshaw and handed it over to police so that it could be returned to the owner.

Sarowar Jahan, a junior officer of Narayanganj branch of United Commercial Bank, was on his way to office from Dhaka’s Shyampur area this afternoon and found the bag on the passengers’ seat of the autorickshaw, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

When Sarowar asked the autorickshaw driver whose bag it was, he could not confirm as he had dropped several passengers on the route during the whole day.

The bank official opened the bag and found around Tk four-five lakh and photocopy of a passport inside it. He then took the bag to Fatullah Police Station and handed it over to Manjur Kader, officer-in-charge of the station.

“I handed over the bag to police so that the money could be returned to the owner,” Sarowar told The Daily Star.

Confirming the incident, OC Manjur Kader praised Sarowar for his kindness as he handed over the money to police to return it to the owner.

“The bag has around four-five lakh taka and photocopy of a passport. It probably belongs to someone who might have withdrawn the money from bank or was on his way to deposit the money for going abroad,” the OC said.

“Police will contact the address mentioned in the photocopy of the passport to trace the owner of the money and return it to him,” he also said.

A general diary (GD) has been filed with the police station in this regard, the police official added.
