Contempt: SC hearing on Janakantha tomorrow

A larger bench of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division will tomorrow hear the contempt of court rule against Janakantha editor and publisher and its executive editor.

A four-member bench of the appellate division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha said this while hearing the rule today.

The court issued the rule against Janakantha Editor and Publisher Atiqullah Khan Masud and its Executive Editor Swadesh Roy on July 29 over an article published in the daily on July 15 involving the family of condemned war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

Today, the court said the larger bench of the apex court will hear the rule as the article is involved with the integrity of the judges.

The court also asked advocate Salauddin Dolon, a lawyer for Janakantha, to submit the report and article published by the Janakantha involving this court after July 29 before it tomorrow.

On July 29, the Supreme Court issued a contempt of court rule against the editor and the executive editor of Bangla daily Janakantha over a July 16 article published on Salauddin Quader Chowdhury's family and a judge.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha issued the suo moto rule after announcing a verdict that upheld the death penalty for Salauddin for his war crimes and genocide.
