‘Drug trader’ killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’
A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin upazila early today.
Deceased Jamal Haq alias Jambu Mia, son of Hares Mia of Joynagar village in the upazila, was wanted in 13 cases, said Mamun-or-Rashid, officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakkhin Model Police Station.
Being tipped off that a group of “drug peddlers” has gathered in Dhanpur, a team of police conducted a drive there, the OC said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire, forcing them to fire back in “self-defense”, leaving Jamal injured while the others managed to flee the scene.
Later, he was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, the police official said.
Meanwhile, police recovered 30 kgs of hemp and 2,000 Yaba pills from the spot.
