Gafargaon municipal polls stayed for 3 months

The High Court today stayed the process for holding elections to the Gafargaon municipality in Mymensingh for three months due to anomalies in area demarcation.
In response to a writ petition, the court ordered the Election Commission and the government authorities to immediately take steps to extend the area of the municipality.
It also issued a rule asking the authorities to explain in four weeks as to why the schedule for the December 30 election to the municipality should not be declared illegal.
The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan came up with the order and rule after hearing a writ petition by the sitting mayor of the municipality.
