‘Govt calls for meeting with pvt universities’

Bangladesh government has called for a meeting with private universities in the backdrop of finding involvement of private university students with terrorism.

Home and education ministries have called the meeting for July 17. Owners, teachers and student representatives of all universities have been called to attend.

A reliable source at the home ministry confirmed The Daily Star that a meeting has been convened in this regard and that it's likely date is July 17.

Apart from the ministry officials, top brasses of different law enforcement agencies are expected to attend the meeting, the ministry official told The Daily Star on condition of anonymity.

The two back-to-back attacks in Bangladesh within July's first week revealed that the attackers were students of privately-run universities and emotionally detached from their families.

Now, after the attacks, the government has launched several programmes to curb militancy.

Currently, there are a total of 95 privately-run universities in Bangladesh. Of these, 80 universities are running their academic activities and curriculum.
