Hectic campaign on in three municipalities as polls near

Electioneering in Thakurgaon, Pirganj and Ranishankoil municipalities in the district has gained momentum as the aspirants are now going door to door to woo voters.
The candidates along with their supporters are holding meetings in the yards and urging people to caste votes in favour of them in the elections, slated for December 30.
They are also making pledges to develop the municipalities and take initiatives to improve people's living standard.
Leaflets containing election pledges and candidate's views regarding development of the areas are being distributed among the voters.
Central leaders of Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) also visited different areas of the municipalities and sought votes for their candidates.
AL Presidium Member Satish Chandra Roy, President of Jubo Mohila Leauge Nazma Begum, General Secretary of Jubo Mohila League Apu Ukil, Shomi Kaiser, daughter of martyred intellectual Shahidullah Kaiser, and Dr Nuzhat Chowdhury, daughter of martyred intellectual Dr Alim Chowdhury, visited Thakurgaon and campaigned in favour of AL nominated candidate.
BNP's acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and the party's standing committee member Lt General (rtd) Mahbubur Rahman, also visited the municipalities to woo votes for their party candidates.
The hectic campaign of the councillors and female candidates for the posts of councillors (reserved for women) is attracting voters' attention as they are also wooing votes going door to door.
As many as 52,918 voters in Thakurgaon municipality, 18,053 in Pirganj municipality and 11,408 in Ranishankoil municipality are expected to exercise their right to franchise through 39 polling centres in three municipalities.
In Thakurgaon municipality, four candidates will vie for mayoral post, 53 for councillor post and 16 for the post of councillor reserved for women.
In Pirganj municipality, four will vie for mayoral post, 40 for councillor post and 10 for the post of councillor reserved for women.
In Ranishankoil municipality, four will vie for mayoral post, 32 for councillor post and 11 for the post of councillor reserved for women.
District Election Officer Shukur Mahmud Mia said they are taking necessary measures to ensure a free, fair and credible election in the upazila.
