A Mymensingh court today sent two men including a journalist to jail, a day after they were arrested with firearms and sharp weapons in the district town.

Police produced Sheikh Mehdi Hasan Nadim, 35, managing editor of local newspaper Dainik Jahan, and his accomplice Rassel, 30, before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahsan Habib however sent them to jail without holding a hearing on the remand prayer.

The court fixed tomorrow to hold a hearing on the remand prayer, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

According to police, a team of the Detective Branch of police raided Nadim's house at Mashkanda around 4:00am yesterday and recovered two pistols with six bullets and sharp weapons.

Materials for making firearms and sharp weapons were also found in their possession.

A case was lodged against the duo with Kotwali Police Station under the arms act and the explosive substances act.

After the arrest, Nadim's mother Prof Rebeka Yeasmin, editor of the Dainik Jahan, claimed that police had not found any firearms in his possession.

Describing the recovery of the arms as a conspiracy to tarnish the image of the daily and the family, she rejected her son's involvement in drugs trade as well.
