Man detained in Cox’s Bazar, killed in Jashore ‘gunfight’
A murder case accused, detained from Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday, was killed in “gunfight” with detectives in Jashore this morning, police say.
The deceased, identified as Jewel Hossain (29) of Hasimpur village under Sadar upazila in Jashore, was one of the main accused of Ansar member Hossain Ali murder case, our Benapole correspondent reports quoting Tauhidul Islam, additional superintendent police (ASP) in Jashore.
The Bangladesh Ansar and VDP member was shot dead on November 30 at Hasimpur Bazar by a group of miscreants, said the police official.
So far, seven people have been arrested in this connection, however the main accused Jewel and Munna were absconding after the incident, Tauhidul said.
A team of Jashore Detective Branch (DB) arrested Jewel from Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday, the ASP said.
Following his statement, DB members along with Jewel conducted a raid at Hasimpur village around 4am today to detain Munna, he said.
Munna and his cohorts opened fire on the DB team forcing the law enforcers to retaliate -- triggering a gunfight, ASP Tauhidul said.
During the gunfight, Jewel sustained bullet wounds and was rushed to Jashore General Hospital, where duty doctors declared him dead, he added.
Police recovered a pistol, a locally made firearm and 12 rounds of ammunitions, left by the miscreants who engaged in gunfight with the law enforcers and later fled, the ASP said.
Jewel was brought back to Jashore from Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday night, hours before the gunfight, said Maruf Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jashore Detective Branch.
