A Union Parishad member was beaten to death by miscreants in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari early today.

Shawkat Ali Mandal, the victim, was a member of ward no. 4 under Mourat Union Parishad. He was also the general secretary of ruling Awami League’s ward unit.

Ahsan Ullah, officer-in-charge of Pangsha Police Station, said criminals barged into a pharmacy at Bagduli Bazar around 8:30pm and assaulted Shawkat.

He was taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed around 3:00am.

Neither the motive behind the assault, nor the identities of the attackers could be known immediately.
