Attorney General Mahbubey Alam today said that the involvement of Supreme Court lawyers in financing militancy outfits is alarming.

"No lawyers have been held over such allegations before," he told reporters at his office referring to the two Supreme Court lawyers held yesterday.

The attorney general said it will be proved in the trial whether the three lawyers are guilty or not as the law enforcers have arrested them based on eliminatory evidence.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Khandaker Mahbub Hossain told reporters that he did not believe the three lawyers are involved in financing militants.

"If the allegations against them are proved, the SCBA will not support them," he said.

A group of pro-BNP lawyers also formed a human chain at the SCBA premises in protest against the arrest of the lawyers.

Yesterday, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) claimed arrested of three lawyers, two of them of the top court, from a house at Dhanmondi area in Dhaka for allegedly funding a militant group.

The arrestees are identified as Supreme Court lawyers Barrister Shakila Farjana, 39, and Advocate Hasanuzzaman Liton, 30, and Judge Court lawyer Advocate Mahfuz Chowdhury Bapon, 25.
