Mir Quasem ‘nervous’ after hearing SC order

Condemned war criminal Mir Quasem Ali became "mildly nervous" after hearing the apex court's order that scrapped his petition seeking review against death.

"He became mildly nervous, but he is physically well," said Nashir Ahmed, jailor of Kashimpur Central Jail-2, where the death row convict is being held.

The Supreme Court dismissed Quasem's review petition first thing this morning leaving presidential pardon the final straw between the Jamaat-e-Islami leader and the gallows.

"Mir Quasem Ali heard the news through radio around 10:30am," said jailor Nashir.

A death warrant is already out for Quasem. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has said the government will proceed with his execution after the apex court releases full text of its order.

Quasem was a notorious Al-Badr leader in Chittagong during Bangladesh's Liberation War. Later, he conned his way to becoming the prime moneyman of the fundamentalist Jamaat.

The Jamaat-e-islami leader, along with his aides, abducted pro-liberation people and persecuted them inside torture cells like Dalim Hotel, Dowsta Mohammad Panjabee Building and Salma Manzil Torture Cell, before killing them.
