Mymensingh boy tortured for ‘stealing’ phone
A 12-year-old boy has been tortured in Mymensingh and its video leaked in the social media. Following public outrage, a case has been filed over the matter.
The abuser is Safir Uddin Saru, vice-president ward no. 18 of Mymensingh municipality's Awami League unit, our Mymensingh correspondent reports.
Local Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Kamrul Isalm, however, insisted that the boy, Saddam Hossain, 12, is a "snatcher" and was arrested over such allegations earlier.
The incident took place on Wednesday. Saddam was on his way home from Netrokona in the afternoon around 2:00pm. When he reached Patgodam area, Suru allegedly waylaid him along with his associates and beat him up.
The victim was physically tortured with sticks over an allegation against him of stealing a mobile set recently from Krishtapur area, police said. The video of this brutal torture was leaked in social media.
Following public outrage over the incident, victim's mother Parvin Akhtar filed a case with Kotwali police accusing four to five unidentified persons around 10:00pm last night.
"I am not a snatcher and I repeatedly requested them not to beat me but they did not bother to listen to me at all", Saddam said. His mother demanded punishment of the assaulters.
Safir Uddin could not be contacted despite repeated attempts over the phone. No arrests were made in this regard until last reported this afternoon.
