Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid today reiterated assurances to solve public university teachers' pay issue through discussions.

"Discussions with teachers in this regard will be held on Tuesday (October 6)," he said at a meeting in secretariat, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

The public university teachers have been protesting for months and abstaining from work for months in demands for a separate pay scale.

They have termed the government's new pay scale (for all civil servants), implemented from June this year, discriminatory and disgraceful.

The government formed a new committee, headed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith, to reconsider the teachers' demand.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has slammed the teachers for their ongoing protest and said that the matter will be overseen by the committee.

Education Minister Nahid has already had a meeting with the protesting teachers. Therein also he assured the teachers of coming to a solution through discussion.

In loggerheads with the government, the agitating teachers warned if their demands are not met soon, the university admission tests starting from October 9 might be hampered.

Today, the minister was meeting different project directors of the education ministry at the secretariat.
