Rajshahi double murder: 3 to die, 4 get life term
The speedy trial tribunal in Rajshahi today sentenced three people including a local Awami League leader to death in connection with the sensational double murder of a mother and her son in Bagmara upazila in the district in 2014.
Judge Anup Kumar also awarded life term imprisonment to four other accused in the case, our staff correspondent reports quoting Entajul Haque, public prosecutor of the tribunal.
The tribunal convicted Abul Hossain, 52, organising secretary of Bagmara upazila unit of AL, for masterminding the murders in order to misappropriate their properties, added the prosecutor.
Hossain who got the capital punishment was also the headmaster of Deula Rani Riverview High School of the locality.
Habibur Rahman, 40, an alleged drug peddler, and Abdur Razzak, 37, a dismissed member of Bangladesh Border Guards, of Durgapur upazila, are the rest two, who were sentenced to death.
Habibur and Razzak formed a team to orchestrate criminal activities and they helped Hossain in the murder, Haque said.
Four others who got life term are Rustom Ali, 26, Ruhul Amin, 30, Monirul Islam, 23, and Abdulahil Kafi, 22, who were hired to supply weapons and protect the killers during the murder.
On the night of November 24 in 2014, Aklima Begum and her son Zahid Hasan were killed in their home in Deula village of Bagmara upazila. Police recovered their bodies with their throats slit in the following morning.
Aklima’s elder son Dulal Hossain filed a murder case with Bagmara police station accusing unnamed persons after the murders.
The plaintiff of the case Dulal Hossain expressed his satisfaction in the verdict and demanded its immediate execution of the convicts.
