An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah early today.

Name and other details about the deceased could not be known immediately, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.

A patrol team of police stopped their van at Kanchatala bazaar on Kaliganj-Chaprail road around 1:40am after they noticed that a tree was felled on the road.

As soon as they stopped their van, the robbers opened fire targeting the law enforcers forcing them to retaliate that triggered a 10-minute "gunfight", police said.

After the bandits managed to flee the scene, police found the bullet-hit robber and rushed him to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead around 2:40am, the sources said.

The body bore two bullet marks on his chest, according to the sources at the health complex.

During the gunfight, three constable of Kaliganj Police Station -- Sohel Rana, Mohammad Ullah and Ripon Hossain -- suffered injuries and were rushed to the health complex where they received first aid.

Police recovered a pistol, two bullets, a machete and a knife from the spot.

Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, confirmed the incident.
