‘Robber’ killed in Keraniganj ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed and five policemen injured in what law enforcers termed as a 'gunfight' in Dakkhin Keraniganj, Dhaka early today.

The deceased -- Md Yusuf, 34, a member of an inter-district gang of robbers -- was bullet hit in a gunfight that took place between the cops and his cohorts around 1:45pm, Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Dakkhin Keraniganj Police Station told The Daily Star.

There was a robbery case with Dakkhin Keraniganj Police Station and six other cases including killing cases with Dohar Police Station against Yusuf, the police official said.

He succumbed to his injuries at the capital's Mitford Hospital, the OC said.

When a team of law enforcers, acting on a tip-off, was conducting a drive in Muslimnagar area, the robbers opened fire at them sensing their presence, he said.
The law enforcers also retaliated, triggering a "gunfight" between them, the OC said.

Police claimed to have detained two people -- Sohrab Hossain alias Sohrab Dakat and Ismail Shordar -- and recovered a pistol, two rounds of bullets and sharp weapons from the spot.

Five policemen also sustained minor injuries in the incident, the OC added.
