Set ablaze ‘by in-laws’, Chandpur woman dies
A woman who was set on fire allegedly by her husband and in-laws in Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur last Tuesday has died.
Victim Dipika Acharya succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) today, our local correspondent reports quoting police.
She was said to have been burned beyond 90 per cent.
Husband Bipul Acharya, his mother Sandhya Rani Achariya, and elder brother Sajal Acharya have been arrested so far in connection with a case filed by the victim’s elder brother Arabinda Acharya, said Haziganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossain.
According to the case statement, Dipika was set ablaze after her in-laws allegedly poured kerosene and set her ablaze on the wee hours of May 1.
They tried to cover up the incident as an accident and took her to Haziganj Upazila Health Complex. She was later taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
According to the victim’s family sources, the couple of 10 years were living an unhappy life because the husband was a drug addict.
Arabinda claimed her sister was brutally tortured before she was set on fire.
OC Alamgir Hossain has also affirmed the death of Dipika.
