10 Biman flights suspended on 4 domestic routes till Monday

Biman Bangladesh Airlines today suspended operation of its ten flights on four domestic routes till Monday due to shortage of aircrafts following Wednesday’s Biman flight accident at Yangon Airport.

“Ten flights on Sylhet, Rajshahi, Jashore and Saidpur routes will remain suspended due to shortage of aircrafts,” Shakil Meraj, general manager (public relations) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines told The Daily Star.

Biman crash-lands in Yangon, 33 hurt

The Biman authorities run flight operation of ten domestic routes across the country with three planes of Bombardier Dash-8 model, said sources at the national flag carrier.

As a plane out of the three was damaged due to the flight accident in Myanmar’s Yangon International Airport, the authorities are facing problem to run its operation on all the domestic routes with the rest aircrafts, the sources said.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BIMAN FLIGHT AT YANGON?

All 33 passengers and crew members on a Biman flight to Yangon were injured on Wednesday evening when the plane went off the runway while landing at Yangon airport in bad weather.

Of the injured, 19, including an infant and six women, were taken to North Okkalapa Hospital in Yangon. Four of them were released later at night.

“None of them had life-threatening injuries. One passenger had a leg and a hand broken,” Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury, Bangladesh ambassador to Myanmar, told The Daily Star over telephone after the incident. Pilot Shamim Nazrul was injured, he said.

Photos of the incident circulated by the local media and found on Facebook showed that the 74-seater Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 aircraft was on the grass and largely in one piece.

The fuselage was cracked and crumpled at places and the landing gears appeared to have collapsed.
