‘Social media guidelines’ for civil servants

The government today issued a draft 11-point guideline for social media use of public servants with provisions against propagation of political ideology and provocative statements.

The cabinet division issued the guideline which will be applicable for all ministries, divisions, directorates, agencies, field level offices, education and training institutions and public servants.

The guidelines have been drafted in order to ensure effective use of social media in the government offices and to set dos and don'ts for the public offices and servants.

Civil servants cannot propagate any political ideology and have been discouraged to publish any statement in the social media which are against the national unity and spirit.

No discriminatory and demining content against any indigenous and ethnic minority community can be published. Similarly, publication of discrediting statements on any person, institution, state or gender has been discouraged.

Any content that can create unrest among the public has also been barred.

It is said that every government office will have to review its social media use's effectiveness and development in every three months.
