‘Time bombs’are fake
Experts this afternoon confirmed that the time bomb-like devices recovered in Gazipur early today did not contain any explosive elements.
Khandaker Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Joydevpur Police Station, told our Gazipur correspondent that someone had left the objects there aiming to creating panic among people.
The devices were found abandoned in a field named Balurmath in Targachh area of Gazipur city around 4:45 in the morning, the police official also said.
Law enforcers earlier thought the devices could be used to carry out subversive activities at the Biswa Ijtema ground, which is five kilometres off the place where the objects were found.
"According to our primary investigation, these devices were meant to be used for sabotage at Biswa Ijtema," said Md Harun-or-Rashid, police superintendent of Gazipur.
Biswa Ijtema is the second largest religious congregation of the Muslims after the Hajj. The second phase of the congregation, which began on Friday in Tongi, ended today through Akheri Munajat.
