Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation today placed a 16-point recommendation to curb road accidents, which has become a major concern lately.

The federation, an umbrella organisation of more than 200 unions of road transport workers, placed the proposals at a roundtable organised by it at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

“Road accident is an outcome of overall weakness of the sector, therefore, a cumulative effort is needed to curb road accidents,” Oshman Ali, general secretary of the federation, said while reading out the keynote speech.

Their proposal includes strict initiatives for establishing driving schools and to produce skilled drivers and driving instructors, provide regular training to the drivers, checking documents of vehicles and drivers.

Shahjahan Khan, president of the federation who also presided over the programme, said that simply blaming only drivers for road accidents would not solve the problem.

He emphasised on implementation of 111 recommendations given by a committee led by him to reduce road accidents and bring discipline in the transport sector.
