BSMRSTU VC leaves campus under police protection
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) Vice Chancellor Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin left the university campus tonight several hours after University Grants Commission (UGC) recommended withdrawal of the VC based on evidence of irregularities and corruption.
VC Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin on his private car left his residence around 9:30pm and started going towards Dhaka, Saidur Rahman, superintendent of police in Gopalganj, told The Daily Star tonight.
A police team helped Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin to cross the university area, said Saidur Rahman.
At that time, students who have been demonstrating for the resignation of the vice-chancellor for his alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities, started chanting slogans against VC Nasiruddin.
Earlier, the UGC has recommended withdrawal of BSMRSTU Vice Chancellor Prof Khondoker Md Nasiruddin based on evidence of irregularities and corruption.
The UGC probe committee, formed to investigate the irregularities and corruption allegation against the VC, today submitted its report to its chairman with the recommendation.
A member of the investigation committee, seeking anonymity, confirmed the development to The Daily Star.
UGC chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah told The Daily Star that he received the probe report from the inquiry team at his office this morning.
On September 24, the UGC formed the five-member committee to investigate the situation of BSMRSTU as students of the university have been demonstrating since September 18, demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor for his alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities.
On September 25, the five-member team, led by UGC member Dr Muhammad Alamgir, went to the BSMRSTU campus and talked to teachers, students and other concerned people. The team members stayed on the campus for the two days.
The committee was formed by the UGC as the education ministry on September 23 sent a letter to the UGC, asking to form a committee to investigate the situation at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Gopalganj.
