A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to provide state honour and honorarium to the language heroes and language martyrs in order to protect and preserve the memories of the Language Movement.

Advocate Subir Nandi Das submitted the petition in Bangla as a public interest litigation on Thursday requesting the court to order the government to publish the full list of language heroes through issuing a gazette notification and to take necessary steps to bury the language martyrs with state dignity.

In the petition, he also prayed to the HC to issue a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why their failure to provide state honour and honorarium to the language heroes and language martyrs should not be declared illegal.

Petitioner's lawyer Advocate Ishrat Hasan told The Daily Star yesterday that Bangla has been established as the state language of the country through the Language Movement, but the language heroes are not given proper dignity and honorarium.

The HC may hold hearing on the writ petition next week, the lawyer added.
