President Hamid to be sworn in tomorrow for a second term

President Md Abdul Hamid will be sworn in as the head of the state for a second consecutive term tomorrow as parliament unanimously decided to entrust him with the presidency for a consecutive term.

The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 7:30pm tomorrow. JatiyaSangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will administer his oath of office at the Bangabhaban Darbar Hall, sources at the Bangabhabantold The Daily Star.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, chief justice, former presidents, judges, members of the cabinet, MPs, senior politicians, diplomats and other distinguished personalities are expected to attend the ceremony.

On February 7, Abdul Hamid was re-elected the country's president for a second consecutive term.

Abdul Hamid took the responsibility of president in- charge on 14 March 2013 while the then president Md Zillur Rahman was under treatment in Singapore. After his death, Hamid became the acting president on 20 March 2013. Later on, he became the elected president on 22 April 2013.

A veteran politician, Hamid was born on January 1, 1944 in Kamalpur of Mithamain, Kishoregonj, according to the Bangabhaban website.

He started his political career in 1959 by joining the then student front Chatra League. He joined Awami League at the end of 1969.Hamid directly participated in our great Liberation war in 1971.

In the National Assembly Election of 1970, Mr. Hamid was elected as a junior most member from Mymensingh-18 Constituency. In 1972, he became the member of National Assembly.

Father of three sons and one daughter, Abdul Hamid was elected MP for six times.

For his outstanding contribution in our Independence and Liberation War, Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid was conferred the Independence Award-2013.

Hamid who is respected to all for his natural charming and friendly behavior, has been elected Speaker in the ninth parliament.
