Anti-quota demo: CU students sweep street
A group of Chittagong University students staged a unique demonstration on the campus this morning demanding reformation of the existing quota system in cadre service and other government jobs.
Around 300 students under the banner of Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Parishad (BSCP), of the university, held a ‘Street Cleaning Campaign’ programme in front of the university’s gate No. 1 to press home their demand.
In the protest programme, a number of students hanging their certificates on their neck, were seen sweeping the streets.
Job seekers across the country have been demanding reformation of the existing quota system.
Their demands include recruiting job seekers to vacant posts on the basis of merit if eligible candidates are not found under quota, preventing special recruitment tests for candidates falling under the quotas, and ensuring unified age for all jobseekers.
Currently, only 44 percent job seekers are recruited on the basis of merit. The remaining 56 percent candidates are recruited on the basis of privileges under various quotas.
However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while addressing a rally in Chittagong on March 21 said, the quota system in government jobs for freedom fighters, their children and grandchildren will continue.
