Road crashes killed 357 in Aug: Report
The month of August this year saw 314 road accidents across Bangladesh which killed 357 people including 50 women and 60 children, said a report today.
The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR), a non-government organisation, revealed the information in its monthly survey and observation report for August.
However, the number of road accidents and deaths by accidents across the country decreased in August compared to the previous month due to the road safety movement and prime minister’s stern directives, said the report.
The report was prepared on the basis of news published in 22 national dailies, 10 regional newspapers and eight online news portals and news agencies. According to the report, the month July saw 346 road accidents killing 374 people including 44 women and 67 children.
This means the number of road accidents decreased by 32 and death toll lessened by 17 in August. But the number of injured in road accidents increased by 14 as in July the toll was 902 and in August it was one thousand and six, the report said.
In the last eight months of 2018, at least 3,202 people, including 411 women and 453 children, were killed and 7883 others injured in 3,013 road accidents across the country, the survey report says.
Two hundred and eleven of these accidents took place in the 13 days of Eid journey from June 12-24 that killed 248 and injured 717.
Ninety-six other accidents occurred during the other Eid holiday, from August 15-25. At least 142 died and 318 were injured in these accidents including women and children.
