Seven people were killed and three injured in separate road accidents in Gopalganj and Jashore districts today.

In Gopalganj, five people died as a Dhaka-bound private car hit a roadside tree after its driver lost control over the wheels, causing the car to catch fire, reports our Faridpur correspondent quoting police.

The incident took place on Dhaka-Barishal highway at Dignagar area under Mukshudpur upazia of the district around 3:40pm, said Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station.

Three passengers of the car died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries while being taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, the OC said.

Two of the deceased were identified as Farid Sheikh, 35, and Shahin Sheikh, 38, while the identities of the three others could not be known immediately, he added.

In Jashore, two persons died and three were injured as a Jhenaidah-bound brick-laden truck hit an autorickshaw from behind in Santala Bazar area of Sadar upazila this morning, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting police.

The deceased were identified as Tania, 30, a Brac Bank official, and Hasan, 45, a resident of Daulatdihi area of the upazila. They died on the spot after the accident, said Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Jashore Kotwali Police Station.

Locals rescued the injured -- Pratik, 40, Nazrul, 50, and Monowara, 24, -- and rushed them to Jashore General Hospital where they are now being treated. Among them, Monowara has critical injuries on her head and has been referred to Dhaka for better treatment, said Dr Enam Uddin, a physician at the hospital's emergency unit.

Police seized the truck but its driver and helper managed to flee from the scene. A case has been filed in this connection with the police station, the OC added.
