Serve without harassment: President asks police

President Abdul Hamid today asked the police to ensure services without harassment as the people go to them (police) as the last resort.

"The peace-loving people usually don't go to Thana or Police in this country. They go to police after becoming very helpless. So, it'll have to ensure that those who seek their services can avail that without any sort of harassment," he said.

The President made the call while addressing annual dinner arranged on the occasion of the Police Week 2018 at Bangladesh Auditorium in Dhaka's Rajarbagh Police Line this evening.

Abdul Hamid said it is constitutional right of the people to get the police services; it's no favour or charity.

The people will get full confidence in police when they'll be able to think of police as their friends and get expected services in time of need, he said.

Terming Bangladesh Police an old and traditional institution, he said the role of police is very important in improving the law and order situation everywhere including grassroots levels of the country.

President Hamid urged every member of the police force to work with sincerity and devotion to improve the law and order situation across the country.

Praising the activities of law enforcement agencies, the president said Bangladesh Police continues its relentless efforts to contain terror and militant activities, arrest criminals and submit charge-sheet of sensational cases in quick time alongside improving the overall law and order situation.

He, however, asked the police force to play more responsible role to get expected improvement of the law and order situation.

Abdul Hamid said the police has also important role in the country's socio-economic development by maintaining law and order, providing protection to public lives and property and establishment of rule of law.

"If the law and order situation and public safety are hampered, the development will be stagnant, and people will feel sense of insecurity, investment will be obstructed and the overall economy will be stagnant. So, the improvement of law and order situation is prerequisite for the country's stability and development," he said.

He also said it is noticed in the newspapers that the cybercrime is rising gradually and those who engaged in the crimes are mostly from juvenile and young generation. "Drug addiction and abuse of narcotics lead the young generation to crimes. So, it (police) will have to take 'zero tolerance policy' against drug."

The president hoped that being imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War every member of Bangladesh Police will perform their duty with highest professionalism, sincerity and honesty to fulfill the expectation of the country and its people.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Secretary of Public Security Division Mostafa Kamal Uddin, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque and secretaries concerned to the president were also present in the function.
