Stop construction of multi-storey building at Jhenidah public park

The High Court today directed the authorities concerned to immediately stop all activities of constructing a multi-storey commercial building at a public park (children park) in Jhenidah and to properly protect and preserve the land as a park keeping its class unchanged.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities to explain why the activities for constructing a multi-storey building at the public park at 125 No Jhenidah Mouja under Jhenidah municipality should not be declared illegal.
The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) challenging the legality of the building construction.
Bela recently submitted the petition to the HC saying that Jhenidah municipality authorities have started constructing a multi-storey commercial building at the public park which is playing a very important role for the amusement of the people including old and child at the area.
Programmes are held in the place on different national days and from 1,500 to 2,000 people walk there every day, the petitioner said, adding that the children park needs to be protected.
In the petition, Bela prayed to the HC to pass necessary directive in this regard.
Advocate Minhazul Haque Chowdhury and Advocate Sayeed Ahmed Kabir appeared for the petitioner.
