Storing Onion illegally: Businessman denied HC bail
The High Court today refused to grant bail to a detained businessman of Lakshmipur, Md Main Uddin, in a case filed on charge of illegally storing 42 sacks of onion.
The court rejected a bail petition filed by Main Uddin in the case considering that the petition was not placed before it properly.
The bench of Justice Md Rais Uddin and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the rejection order after Attorney General Mahbubey Alam vehemently opposed the bail petition during its hearing.
He told the court that onion was a much-talked-about issue of the year and the government’s big achievements including some mega projects were about to be frustrated centering the onion issue.
If the accused petitioner is granted bail other businessmen who store onion illegally will be encouraged, and therefore, he should not be granted bail before submission of the police report of the case to the trial court, the attorney general argued.
Main Uddin’s lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal told The Daily Star that a food distribution officer has filed the case with Lakshmipur Police Station against Main Uddin earlier this month on charge of illegally storing 42 sacks of onion.
Main Uddin surrendered to the trial court in the district on December 16 in connection with the case.
The Lakshmipur court the same day sent Main Uddin to jail, the defence lawyer added.
