Man commits suicide after being ‘falsely implicated in theft’

A man reportedly committed suicide today after a local arbitration “implicated him falsely” in a theft in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital.

Police arrested three people for allegedly provoked him to commit suicide.

Three people -- Alamgir, his wife Anwara and Elias – were detained in connection with the incident, Ram Krishna, a sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station, told our Savar correspondent.

Police are trying to detain the other suspects, the SI said.

Quoting locals SI Ram Krishna said that Nirmol Pramanik, 42, a construction worker, was found hanging from the ceiling at his rented house at Ashulia’s Tenguri area.

Victim’s family members alleged that Belayet, a garage owner, and some other local people brought false allegation against Nirmol that he had stolen an auto rickshaw.

On Saturday midnight Belayet, Alamgir, Elias and some other locals called an arbitration at the garage owned by Belayet. At the arbitration they beat up Nirmol mercilessly and fined him Tk 50,000, according to the victim’s family.

Later they confined Nirmol at his house, the family said.

Feeling insulted and humiliated, Nirmol was crying during the arbitration and also while he was confined in his room saying he did not steal, said Nirmol’s brother Bikash Pramanik.

“We want proper justice and immediate arrest of all culprits who are responsible for my brother’s death,” Bikash said.

“We told Belayet that we would settle the matter in the morning today but Belayet and his men did not ‍listen to me and they tortured Nirmol and fined him Tk 50,000 in the midnight in our absence,” said Karim Chisty, a local union parishad member.

“Later in the morning we heard that Nirmol committed suicide,” he added.

SI Ram Krishna, who recovered the body, said the body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
