Sylhet stone quarry death toll reaches 4
Death toll in last night’s landslide in a stone quarry in Companiganj upazila, Sylhet, reached four when two more bodies were recovered this morning.
Our local correspondent reports, the fresh bodies were yet to be identified. The two others were said to be Motiur Rahman, 30, and Ruhul, 22, from Dakshin Sunamganj, Sunamganj.
Police arrested their employer Akbar Ali, 45, of Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj from the spot, said Dilip Kanti Nath, inspector (investigation) of Companiganj Police Station.
The police officer confirmed The Daily Star this morning of the two fresh bodies recovered and ruled out the fears of finding any more bodies inside the pit.
Quoting other workers, the inspector said some of their fellows were illegally digging out stone from the quarry at Lalpathar around 8:00pm when a chunk of mud fell on them.
Four workers were also injured and were given first aid from a local hospital, he added.
The death toll from the stone quarry accidents in Sylhet stood at 13 in the first two months of this year while it was 32 in the whole year of 2017.
