Police today arrested former Hefajat-e-Islam leader Nasir Uddin Munir, who was the joint assistant secretary of the committee dissolved in April this year, in Chattogram over the mayhem surrounding the outfit's protest of the Indian prime minister's visit in late March.

Abdullah Al Masum, additional superintendent of police of(ASP) of Chattogram district police, told The Daily Star that Nasir Uddin was arrested from Hathazari area around 3:20pm over cases filed over the violence by Hefajat men.

Nasir has been accused in at least six cases filed with Hathazari Police Station. He is now being interrogated and will be produced before a Chattogram court soon, said ASP Masum.

A total of 10 cases were filed with Hathazari police station naming over 100 Hefajat leaders, including Hefajat Chief Mohammad Junayed Babunagari, and BNP activists while over 6,000 unidentified persons were also made accused in the cases.

Four persons including three madrasa students were killed during a clash between Hefajat men and police on March 26 at Hathazari in Chattogram during the demonstrations against the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

Modi had visited Bangladesh to join the concluding ceremony of a programme marking the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence and birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
