Dhaka Attack

Cops to examine newly released photos of Hasnat, Tahmid

Hasnat Karim (white T-shirt), a former university teacher, and Tahmid Hasib (black T-shirt), a student of Canadian university holding a firearm (red circled) in his hand, are seen talking with one of the militants of Dhaka’s Holey Artisan Bakery siege in the early morning of July 2. These photos were collected by Prothom Alo

Law enforcers will examine the newly released photographs of Hasnat Karim and Tahmid Hasib with a Gulshan café attacker, published in different newspapers.

A Dhaka court yesterday allowed police to collect the original photos of Hasnat and Tahmid where they were seen roaming with an armed attacker at the rooftop of Holey Artisan Bakery, said Monirul Islam, the chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yeasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order when Humayan Kabir, DB inspector and also a member of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, placed an appeal before the court.

“We got the permission from the court to collect the original photos from the newspapers for a test at forensic lab to find out whether these were authentic or not,” he said.

Experts will also scrutinise their body language to ascertain whether they were hostages or attackers, Monirul added.

On Sunday hours after some media outlets published several photos of Hasnat and Tahmid with one armed attacker apparently Rohan Imtiaz, police decided to scrutinize the photos and what roles the two played during the bloody siege.

In the photographs “collected” by some news outlets from unknown sources, it can be seen that the two are standing with Imtiaz on the rooftop of the Holey Artisan Bakery.

Tahmid is seen holding a pistol-like firearm. As they stand, their body language seems normal.

Rohan was later killed by army commandos with four other attackers and an employee of the café.
