Legendary singer Sumitra Sen has passed away earlier today. She was 89 years old at the time of her death. According to some reports, Sen had been suffering for a long time and she passed away at her own home in Kolkata. The news was confirmed by her daughter, Srabani Sen—acclaimed Rabindra Sangeet artist—via Facebook.

In the early hours of the morning, Srabani Sen would write on Facebook, "Mother has left us all behind today at dawn."

According to reports, Sen had suddenly caught a cold last month, causing her to be admitted to a private hospital on December 29. Due to her deteriorating health, her family had brought her back home, where she eventually breathed her last.

While in the hospital, Sumitra Sen was diagnosed with bronchopneumonia, which caused further complications to her health.

Recently, in an interview, Srabani Sen had revealed that her mother was well past her prime and was suffering from age-related ailments.

Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences over Sen's death.

"I am deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Sumitra Sen, who had enthralled the audience for decades. I had a close relationship with her for a long time. The West Bengal government had awarded her 'Sangeet Mahasamman' in 2012. Her passing is an irreparable loss to the world of music. My sincere condolences to Sumitra di's daughters Indrani and Srabani, and her fans," said Banerjee.

Sen had sung such hits as "Megh bolechhe jabo jabo", "Tomari jharnatalar nirjone", "Sakhi bhabona kahare bole", "Achhe dukho achhe mrityu", alongside hundreds of other tracks that enthralled Rabindra Sangeet lovers for four decades.
