Swift had previously won eleven Grammys, including one for Best Music Video. In 2018, she and Kendrick Lamar received awards for their "Bad Blood" music video. Since directing the short film "All Too Well," Swift has been tapped to direct her first feature film, based on a screenplay she wrote herself.

Swift did not attend the ceremony where she accepted her Grammy Award, but she tweeted later, "I cannot express how much this means to me. For the Recording Academy and my colleagues to recognize me as a director, so recognizing my efforts to recover my music... I'm astounded. Thank you to all the supporters who wished for this to occur."

Along with Adele, Harry Styles, Doja Cat, and Kendrick Lamar, Swift was nominated in the category for her direction of the 10-minute music video featuring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien.

She released the re-recorded version of her 2012 album Red in November 2021.
