Zayn Malik says he and One Direction bandmates 'Got Sick of Each Other'
Singer Zayn Malik, a former member of the renowned British boy band One Direction, finally spoke out about his decision to leave the group eight years ago in an interview. Sharing his thoughts for the first time in nearly six years, Malik revealed that his desire to outshine his bandmates and launch a successful solo career was a major factor in his departure.
Moreover, after spending five years together, the intense and constant togetherness had taken a toll on the relationships within the band.
Reflecting on his decision, the singer disclosed, "There was a lot of politics going on. Certain people were doing certain things, and certain people didn't want to sign contracts, so I knew something was happening. So I just got ahead of the curve." Zayn wanted to be the first among the quintet to venture into a solo career, and when he sensed that the band's journey might be coming to an end, he made the decision to jump ship.
He also acknowledged the strain of spending an immense amount of time with his bandmates, admitting, "We'd been together every day for five years, and we got sick of each other if I'm being completely honest." Despite the underlying issues and weariness, he cherishes the unforgettable experiences they shared.
Leaving One Direction in March 2015, Zayn's departure marked a turning point for the band, who released one final album without him later that year before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016. Each of the five members has since pursued successful solo careers.
