30 Years of Shah Rukh Khan: The 'Badshaah' of Bollywood continues to reign over hearts
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) stormed into our hearts with classics such as "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge"(DDLG) , "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Dil To Pagal Hai", and many others. Sometimes called 'King Khan', the actor became famous for playing the quintessential romantic character, "Raj", who would fight the evil goons and woo his lady love using his charming smile.
Shah Rukh Khan's path toward the glitzy world of the silver screen wasn't an easy one either. He first started working on TV shows, before making a splash on the big screen with his first theatrical release for Bollywood, "Deewana" in 1992. His first movie appearance was "Dil Ashna Hai" where he had a small cameo appearance.
Khan knew that he had to prove his worth and thus worked tirelessly to succeed. As a result, in his second year in the industry, his movies "Baazigar" and "Darr" both became massive hits in the box office.
There is not a single 90's kid out there who doesn't remember Shah Rukh Khan, and some of his iconic lines, such as this one from DDLG:
"Bade bade shehron mein asi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hai, Senorita. Tum Nahi Samjhoghi."
I fell in love with Raj when I saw him literally fleeing London to follow Simran to India. He knew that he couldn't live without his beautiful Simran, and was heartbroken at the thought of even losing her. And so, he went on his pursuit to reunite with the love of his life.
Shah Rukh Khan also became iconic for playing the psycho lover in "Darr", a performance which literally send shivers down an audience's spine. Khan is quite a versatile actor whose range allows him to taken even the most basic characters and turn them into memorable ones.
The actor's most iconic character, "Raj", was featured in several of his movies including "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi", "Chalte Chalte", "Mohabbatein", "Baadshah", "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", "Heyy Babyy", and "Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman".
The superstar had the highest number of 'bumper' box office openers in the 1990's, with 16 out of 62 of his films securing the coveted 'bumpers'. SRK also holds the record for the "Highest Grosser of the Year" in India followed by Salman Khan.
While Bollywood is currently going through a downward trend in terms of box office, it seems that only Shah Rukh Khan can break the ongoing dry spell. The actor's latest look from "Jawan" already had audiences amazed and discussing the upcoming movie. SRK is geared up to release three new movies next year starting with "Pathaan", "Jawan" and Rajkumar Hirani's "Dunki."
