5 Netflix shows to complete your weekend watch
If you are looking for streaming recommendations for the weekend, here are some films and shows from Netflix's 'Top 10' list in Bangladesh today.
1. Delhi Crime
After a successful first season, Delhi Crime, featuring Shefali Shah as the lead, is back with another spectacular helping. The show is way more than just a group of police officers investigating crimes.
It portrays conflict in a subtle manner, and is a rollercoaster of emotions. The characters' struggle between their personal and professional lives -- their fury and restraint, and their judgement and facts. It examines the subtleties of human behaviour in addition to the dramatic crimes based on actual incidents, and is a very good representation of the heroes we should look up to as it presents a strong female protagonist fighting against crimes.
2. Fate: The Winx Saga
The long-running Italian animation about a bunch of best-friend fairies, Winx Club, is one of the few female-centric shows that made a successful transition to live action through a darker, edgier series. It is a treat to watch the characters cast a spell, with aesthetically brilliant animation and a family-friendly atmosphere. The popular show features a remarkably deep narrative that delves into the consequences of conflict through generations. Old fans might find the spin-off rather surprising, as the plot shifts from bright colours to a more dark tone. While it attempts its best to stay realistic, there are some charming elements like potions, herbology, magic use, and old relics.
3. The Crown
Based on an award-winning play "The Audience", this lavish, Netflix-original drama follows Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to the present day. The series opens with an intimate look into the queen's early reign, when she rose to the throne at the age of 25 following the death of her father, King George VI. Personal intrigues, loves, and political rivalries that influenced the latter years of the twentieth century are explored as the decades pass. The show garnered much attention after the queen's demise, and is a wonderful representation of the monarchy and its many nuances. It has been critically acclaimed for its relevance to history and fine attention to detail, all of which make it a worthwhile watch.
4. Those Who Wish Me Dead
Hannah Faber, a reckless smoke-jumper with a death wish, is stationed in a fire lookout tower in the centre of Montana's wilderness. There she meets Connor, the son of a forensic accountant, and attracts the attention of a highly skilled pair of assassins intent on permanently silencing the witness. With the task of saving an innocent life under the alarming emergency of a forest fire, Hannah must employ her survival skills. At the heart of this story lies Angelina Jolie, who with her charismatic transformation, captures the attention of audience and critics alike. While it might not be the best thriller offered by Netflix, it serves the purpose of a quick weekend watch.
5. HIT: The First Case
The plot of this South Indian remake is pretty straightforward. It revolves around the life of a detective, played by Rajkummar Rao, who is attempting to solve the kidnapping case of two girls, one of whom happens to be his girlfriend. He is also seen struggling with the trauma of his own history at the same time. What makes this film unique is the simplicity lying within the storytelling. It is nothing spectacular, but the manner it was directed and presented is commendable. It strikes the perfect balance between a mystery, entertainment and action – providing all the more reasons to add it to the weekend watchlist.
