Academy postpones Oscar nominations amid LA fires
Los Angeles has been overwhelmed by devastating fires, resulting in the tragic loss of five lives and major property damage. Several celebrities have lost their houses and are completely taken back by the situation. In response, the Academy Awards has postponed the announcement of the Oscar Nominations List from January 17 to January 19, providing voters with additional time.
Voting for the nearly 10,000 Academy members began on January 8 and was originally scheduled to close on January 12. However, due to the disruption caused by the LA fires, with many members needing to evacuate or assist others in safeguarding their properties, the Academy decided to extend the voting deadline.
The Academy issued an email to its members last night, signed by CEO Bill Kramer, outlining the revised dates. The message stated, "Our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone affected by the devastating fires in Southern California. Many of our members and industry peers reside and work in the Los Angeles area, and our thoughts are with you during this difficult time."
Along with the delay in the nominations list announcement, numerous premieres and events in Los Angeles have been canceled as authorities focus on managing the devastating fires. Amazon MGM Studios and Universal Studios were among the first to cancel the premieres of "Unstoppable" and "Wolf Man". Paramount and Max also called off the premieres of "Better Man" and "The Pitt".
Additionally, the 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards, originally scheduled for January 12, has been postponed to January 26.
In the meantime, the Oscars ceremony is still scheduled to take place on March 2, with Conan O'Brien serving as the host.
