Amazon taps Sophie Turner for ‘Tomb Raider’ series
Sophie Turner is reportedly close to landing the lead role in Amazon's upcoming "Tomb Raider" series. According to Variety, although the deal has not been finalised yet, it is expected to be confirmed shortly.
Amazon gave the series the green light earlier this year, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge is attached as both writer and executive producer under her overall deal with the platform.
The project was initially reported as being in development at the streamer in January 2023.
Turner is set to join the list of prominent actresses who have played Lara Croft, the adventurous character first introduced in the popular "Tomb Raider" video game series.
The globe-trotting heroine has previously been brought to life on screen by Angelina Jolie in two films and later by Alicia Vikander in a separate adaptation.
Turner gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Sansa Stark in HBO's acclaimed series "Game of Thrones," where she starred across all eight seasons. In 2019, she earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work on the show.
She is also known for playing Jean Grey in Fox's "X-Men" film series, appearing in "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "X-Men: Dark Phoenix".
Recently, the actress took on leading roles in the ITV/CW miniseries "Joan" and the Max limited series "The Staircase".
The "Tomb Raider" series is being created through a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios. This partnership stems from dj2's first-look agreement with the studio, aiming to expand the "Tomb Raider" universe through new series and films.
