Hollywood actor Will Smith had made headlines when he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Academy Awards on March 27, 2022.

Rock commented on Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett's hair, calling her "G.I. Jane," which prompted the "King Richard" actor to go on stage and slap him.

The Academy of Motion Pictures then banned Smith from attending any of their events, including the Oscars. Smith publicly apologised to Rock on Instagram: "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be," he wrote. "There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."

Jada also released a comment following the incident, where she focused on healing. "This is a season for healing and I'm here for it," her brief statement read.

Following the altercation, rumours emerged of Jada and Will splitting. The couple, who have openly talked about their marriage troubles on Jada's show "Red Table Talk", were reportedly not getting along after the slap.

However, the speculations are a result of the misconstruction of an article by the UK's Heat Magazine, which is not available anymore. According to the story, Jada would receive a major chunk of her husband's fortune if they were to get a divorce. It was relayed by many other outlets, with a quote from an insider.

The quote reads: "Ever since the Oscars scandal, tensions between them have been palpable. There have been problems for years, but they're barely speaking right now. If they were to split, Will has a fortune of $350million that Jada would be entitled to half of under Californian law."

Notably, the insider does not speak about the couple heading for a divorce. They only address the possibility of it. Furthermore, the couple have not addressed rumours about their divorce or even hinted about separating.

Smith has reportedly been focusing on healing with a therapist after slapping Rock at the Academy Awards.
