Hugo Weaving on how Satyajit Ray introduced him to Indian cinema
Hugo Weaving celebrated for his unforgettable performance as the enigmatic Agent Smith in "The Matrix" saga, recently reflected on his newest cinematic endeavour, "The Rooster".
Directed by Mark Leonard Winter, the film delves into the complexities of human connections, a theme that resonates deeply with Weaving.
In an intimate reflection during one of his interviews, Weaving shared how the artistry of the legendary Satyajit Ray first opened his eyes to the wonders of Indian cinema, shaping his appreciation for storytelling across cultures.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, Hugo Weaving shared his reasons for joining "The Rooster". "I was captivated by the script," he explained.
"Mark and I have collaborated many times and share a great rapport. We've had countless enriching conversations about films, filmmaking, acting, and character development, and I've always enjoyed his company," he added.
"It was Mark who initially attracted me to the project, and then his writing that brought the character to life," Weaving said during the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
Hugo Weaving, best known for his role in "The Matrix," reflected on the profound impact Satyajit Ray had on his admiration for Indian cinema.
"I vividly remember watching his films at the age of 16 and being deeply moved. The Apu Trilogy left a lasting impression on me, as did 'The Chess Players' (Shatranj Ke Khilari) and several of his other works. It was through Ray's masterpieces that I first discovered the richness of Indian cinema," he shared.
Director Mark Leonard Winter then opened up about the personal experiences that inspired "The Rooster". "This film emerged from a challenging period in my life when I felt like I was at war with my own mind. It was a time marked by struggles with mental health—a frightening and empty space to navigate."
"I wanted to create something meaningful to help make sense of that experience," he shared. "In Australia, much like in India, it can be incredibly difficult for men to express their inner struggles. I wanted to delve into that theme through this story."
"The Rooster" is an Australian comedy-drama helmed by Mark Leonard Winter, starring Hugo Weaving, Phoenix Raei, and John Waters.
