Indian actress sentenced to 6 months in jail
Jayaprada was sentenced to 6 months in prison by a Chennai court in connection with a long-running case.She has also been fined Rs 5,000 for the case.
Along with the actor, her business associates Ram Kumar and Raja Babu were found guilty in the case.
Jaya Prada and her business associates used to run a movie theatre in Chennai. However, due to losses, the cinema theatre was closed a few years ago. The employees who worked in the cinemas filed a lawsuit against Jaya Prada for failing to repay the ESI money withheld from their salary.
The actor apparently acknowledged the case and pledged to pay any outstanding debts owed to the theatre personnel. She also sought that the matter be dismissed. However, the court denied her appeal.
In the late '70s and early '80s, Jaya Prada was regarded as one of the most iconic and influential actors in both the Telugu and Hindi film industries. She was also regarded as the most attractive actress of her era.
She quit the film industry at the height of her success to enter politics, where she has remained involved ever since. Jaya Prada is a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party.
