The teaser trailer for James Gunn's "Superman" unveiled the first glimpse of Nicholas Hoult as the infamous Lex Luthor, a role previously portrayed by Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg in Zack Snyder's 2016 blockbuster "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". In a recent appearance on the "Armchair Expert" podcast (via The Playlist), Eisenberg discussed the challenges and drawbacks of his brief stint as the iconic DC villain.

"I was in this Batman movie and the Batman movie was so poorly received, and I was so poorly received," Eisenberg stated. "I've never said this before and it's kind of embarrassing to admit, but I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way, because I was poorly received in something so public."

"I've been in poorly received things that just don't see the light of day, and for the most part, no one knows," he explained. "But this was so public, and I don't read notices or reviews or movie press or anything, so I was unaware of how poorly it was received."

Although "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" earned an impressive $874 million globally, it faced harsh criticism from film reviewers and failed to resonate strongly with comic book movie fans. The film's poor reception marked the uncertainty in the longevity of Zack Snyder's DC Universe, which ultimately faltered in 2017 with the failure of "Justice League".

Earlier this year, Eisenberg shared with Variety that he enjoyed portraying Lex Luthor, explaining, "Whenever you take on a role, you inevitably feel a connection to it," and added, "No matter what it is, even if it's a big Hollywood project, you find yourself connecting to the character."

When questioned about offering advice to Hoult on taking on the role of Superman's nemesis, Eisenberg humorously remarked, "Don't watch me!"

Nicholas Hoult previously mentioned that the "All-Star Superman" comic served as inspiration for his portrayal of Lex Luthor. He explained, "I have been working out. There's that bit in 'All-Star Superman' where he talks about his muscles being real and hard work and all that. I kind of took that as a little bit of a fuel for the fire."

Hoult's portrayal of Lex Luthor in James Gunn's "Superman" is scheduled to arrive in theatres on July 11, brought to audiences by Warner Bros.
