National Film Award-winning filmmaker Zahidur Rahim Anjan, renowned for "Meghmallar", has passed away.

Director Amitabh Reza Chowdhury told The Daily Star that Anjan passed away last night while receiving treatment in Bengaluru, India.

Anjan had reportedly been suffering from liver complications for a long time so he had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru for several months. Last week, his doctors decided to proceed with a liver transplant. 

However, after the surgery, the late director's condition deteriorated, and he was placed on life support. He passed away while still under medical care.

Anjan made his directorial debut with "Meghmallar", a film adapted from the short story "Raincoat" by esteemed writer Akhtaruzzaman Elias. Released in December 2014, the film earned him the National Film Award for Best Director and Best Dialogue Writer.

His latest film, "Chander Amabasya", was produced with government funding and is awaiting release.
